Description

★ Struck during the Kidarite occupation of Taxila in 390 ★

SASANIAN KINGS. Bahram IV, 388-399. Drachm (Silver, 27 mm, 3.49 g, 3 h), imitating a drachm of Bahram IV, probably struck by the Kidarites, Taxila, circa 390. Draped bust of Bahram IV, to right, wearing elaborate crown with korymbos; around, illegible legend. Rev. Fire altar flanked by two attendants, resembling two fire altars themselves; around illegible legend. SNS III, pl. 33, A1. Rare and lightly toned. Good very fine.

This rare and interesting issue was probably struck in Taxila during the Kidarite occupation of the city in circa 390. The Kidarites were a belligerent Hunnic tribe that dreaded both by the Sasanians in the west and the Gupta Empire in the East.
