Description

★ Of the highest rarity, the second known example ★

PHILISTIA (PALESTINE). Uncertain mint. Mid 5th century-333 BC. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 2.54 g, 9 h). Hybrid head: bearded male right with gorgoneion-like head set perpendicularly behind; all within dotted square. Rev. Forepart of a lion-like horned animal to right, devouring forepart of a horse; all within dotted square within incuse square. CNG 75 (2007), 531. Gitler & Tal -, cf. XIII.5D (for this obverse type as a reverse) and XXVII.6D (for reverse). Of the highest rarity, the second known example. Porous and with two test cuts, otherwise, good fine.

Please note that this coin is not part of the Canaan Collection, but we have decided to group all Philistian, Samarian and Idumaean coins together.
