Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.72 g, 1 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing plain necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 165E (V73/R112). Nicely toned. Die break on the reverse and with some minor corrosion, otherwise, very fine.
