ISLAMIC, Ottoman Empire. Salim I Yavuz ('the Grim'), AH 918-926 / AD 1512-1520. Ashrafi (Silver, 20 mm, 3.38 g, 10 h), Misr, AH 924 = 1518. Cf. Numismatica Genevensis 7 (2012), 1896 var. (differing symbols), Pere 118 var. (differing symbols). Sultan -. Apparently unpublished and unique with the Mamluk six-petaled rosette. Light areas of weakness and with minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
From an important collection of late Mamluk and Ottoman gold coins.
The style of this type is clearly reminiscent of Mamluk coins, which perhaps indicates that Mamluk artists were subsequently employed by Salim I.
