Description

★ A large Greek weight of 1 Mna of 668 g ★

WEIGHTS, Greek. Weight of 1 Mna (Lead, 105x108 mm, 668.00 g), Eu..., magistrate (?), SE 231 = 82/1 BC. ETOYΣ AΛΣ / ΔHMOΣIA - MNA Two crossed cornucopiae; to left, disk inscribed ЄY. Rev. Latticework design. Gorny & Mosch 175 (2009), 325. Some deposits and with surface cracks on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

Commercial weights such as this one were produced in cities currently or formerly under Seleukid control, where they were, as indicated by the obverse inscription ΔHMOΣIA ('public'), used as official market weights. This example is dated to SE 231 = 82/1 BC, which was the year after the Armenian King Tigranes II 'the Great' gained control over the heartland of the Seleukid Empire, including its capital Antiochia on the Orontes. The weight of 668 g roughly corresponds to a Mna of 150 Attic drachms.
