Description

★ A beautifully toned tetradrachm from Samos ★

ISLANDS OFF IONIA, Samos. Circa 408/4-380/66 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 15.10 g, 6 h), Pythion, magistrate. Facing lion's scalp. Rev. ΠYΘΙΩN - ΣA Forepart of a bull to right, festively decorated with an ornamented collar; behind to left, olive branch; all within shallow incuse square. Barron Class X, - (A74/P-). Meadows, Hecatomnos, p. 107, 23 ( same dies ). SNG Copenhagen 1689 ( same obverse die ). A bold and impressive piece, beautifully toned and with very attractive natural surfaces. About extremely fine.
