★ A very rare tetrassarion of Plautilla from Hypaepa ★
LYDIA. Hypaepa. Plautilla, Augusta, 202-205. Tetrassarion (Orichalcum, 29 mm, 12.68 g, 6 h), Flavius Hierax, magistrate. ΦOYΛ ΠΛAYTIANH•C Draped bust of Plautilla to right, wearing stephane; in field to right, countermark: facing cult statue of Artemis Anaitis within oval punch. Rev. ЄΠI CTP T Φ[Λ]AOY [I]ЄPAKOC // YΠAIΠH/NΩN Caracalla on horseback to right, brandishing spear; below, shield and bound captive kneeling to right. Altinoluk T124.3 = SNG Hunterian 1685 corr. ( same dies, but obverse legend misread). For countermark, Howgego 233. Very rare. The reverse slightly double struck, otherwise, very fine.
In the obverse legend of this and the previous lot 659 above, Plautilla adopts the cognomen of her father, Gaius Fulvius Plautianus, who was commander of the Praetorian Guard.
