Description

Mark Antony, 44-30 BC. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.80 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Mark Antony (Patrae?), 32-31. ANT AVG - III VIR•R•P•C• Galley right, with scepter tied with fillet on prow. Rev. LEG - III Aquila between two signa. Babelon (Antonia) 106. Crawford 544/15. CRI 350. RBW 1839. Sydenham 1217. Sharply struck, nicely toned and very well centered, an exceptional example. Light die wear on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005. Two legions are referenced as one on the reverse of this coin, namely Legio III Gallica, created by Caesar in 49-48 BC, which is known to have served with Mark Antony, and Legio III Cyrenaica, raised by Antony himself
