★ A delightful western portrait, ex Münzen & Medaillen AG 76, 19-20 September 1991, 829 ★

SELEUKID KINGS. Antiochos I Soter, 281-261 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.65 g, 12 h), Smyrna, circa 260s. Diademed head of Antiochos I to right. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ - ANTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, holding three arrows in his right hand and resting his left on grounded bow; in exergue, monograms of NK and ΣΩ. CSE -. SC 311.4. WSM 1496. Lightly toned and with a delightful western portrait. A few tiny marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From the Basileiai Hellēnikai Collection of Exceptional Tetradrachms and from the Medicus Collection, Numismatica Ars Classica 149, 2 December 2024, 32, from the collection of W. Weise, Künker 347, 22 March 2021, 771 and ex Münzen & Medaillen AG 76, 19-20 September 1991, 829. The important Ionian port city of Smyrna fell into Seleukid hands in 281 BC following the defeat of Lysimachos. The magnificent portrait coins of Antiochos I from this city were likely struck after his victory in the famous Battle of the Elephants, in which the Seleukid ruler decisively defeated the Celtic invaders who had been ravaging Asia Minor for years. These invaders were subsequently settled in the region later named after them, Galatia. The exact date of the battle remains a topic of scholarly debate, with estimates placing it either in the mid-270s or early 260s BC
