★ The Basileiai Hellēnikai Collection of Exceptional Tetradrachms ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 17.19 g, 11 h), Memphis, struck under Ptolemy I as satrap, circa 322/1. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; in field to left, rose; below throne, ΔIO. CPE 18. Price 3971 var. (ΔI-O below throne). SNG Copenhagen 8. A lovely example of this prestigious issue, nicely toned, boldly struck in high relief and of fine style. A few light marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Basileiai Hellēnikai Collection of Exceptional Tetradrachms and previously from an old Swiss Collection, privately acquired from Clément Platt in Paris on 1 February 1939.
