Description

★ A vigorous gorgoneion, ex Leu 42, 12 May 1987, 293 ★

LESBOS. Mytilene. Circa 521-478 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 11 mm, 2.54 g, 7 h). Facing gorgoneion with protruding tongue. Rev. Incuse head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress; behind neck, small incuse square. Bodenstedt 19.1.11 and pl. 15, I and 52, c/γ ( this coin ). HGC 6, 944. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG von Aulock 1691. Nicely toned and with a particularly vigorous gorgoneion. Tiny marks and the obverse struck slightly off center, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. med. Cora Flinsch (1920-2022), ex Leu 42, 12 May 1987, 293, and previously privately sold in Zurich in 1975 (according to Bodenstedt).
