★ A reverse of exceptionally attractive style ★
SICILY. Gela. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 17.11 g, 6 h). Charioteer driving quadriga moving slowly to the right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath; in exergue, palmette with volutes. Rev. CEΛΑΣ Forepart of the river-god Gelas, in the form of a man-headed bull, to right; all within shallow circular incuse. HGC 2, 343. Jenkins, Gela, Group IV, 355 (O68/R137). SNG ANS 65 ( same obverse die ). SNG Fitzwilliam 999 ( same obverse die ). Lightly toned and with a beautifully centered reverse of exceptionally attractive style. Minor die breaks and the obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, about extremely fine.
