Description

★ Alexander III 'the Great' as conqueror of Sagalassus ★

PISIDIA. Sagalassus. Claudius II Gothicus, 268-270. 10 Assaria (Bronze, 32 mm, 15.44 g, 12 h). ΑΥ Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΚΛΑΥΔΙΟΝ ϹЄ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Claudius II to right, seen from behind; before, I (mark of value); on shoulder, countermark: eagle standing right with wings spread, head to left and holding wreath in beak, within round incuse. Rev. ΑΛЄΞΑΝΔΡΟϹ ϹΑΓΑΛΑϹϹЄΩΝ Alexander III 'the Great' on horseback to right, attacking fleeing enemy. RPC X online 78061.1 ( this coin ). Unique and of great historical interest. Some earthen deposits, otherwise, very fine.

The reverse of this coin depicts Alexander the Great, who conquered the city of Sagalassus in 333 BC during his campaign through Asia Minor. By featuring the great Macedonian king on their coins, the inhabitants of Sagalassos thus tied their local history to the grand stage of Hellenic world history.
