Description

CILICIA. Diocaesarea. Caracalla, 198-217. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 30 mm, 19.04 g, 1 h). AYTOK•KAIC M•AYP•ANTΩNЄINOC•CЄB Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right; to right, two countermarks: thunderbolt and eagle within oval incusa. Rev. AΔP ΔIOKAICAPЄΩN Athena driving fast quadriga to left, holding thunderbolt in her right hand and shield decorated with aegis in her left. SNG Levante 673. SNG Paris 871. Staffieri 19. For countermarks: Howgego 337 and 469. With lovely reddish highlights on a very attractive dark patina. Minor areas of weakness from countermarking, otherwise, very fine.
