KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip II, 359-336 BC. Stater (Gold, 19 mm, 8.59 g, 9 h), Amphipolis, struck by Antipater, Polyperchon, or Kassander, circa 323/2-315. Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. ΦΙΛΙΠΠOY Charioteer driving biga to right, holding reins in his left hand and goad in his right; below horses, trident. Le Rider 190 (D87'/R149). A lovely and nicely toned piece, with a particularly fine head of Apollo. Very minor marks on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
Ex Leu 86, 5-6 May 2003, 349.
The beautiful surfaces and toning of this fine example suggest that it should have an older pedigree.
