Description

Michael, vestes, judge of the Velon and epi ton oikeiakon, 1st half 11th century. Seal (Lead, 26 mm, 12.44 g, 12 h). Δ૪Λ, R,Θ, CⲰ ΓЄN, CTPAT,Γ,T, ('Commander of the heavenly host, with your kind, help your servant') Nimbate facing bust of St. Michael, holding trefoil scepter in his right hand and globe in his left. Rev. +MIXAHΛ / RЄCTH KPI/TH T૪ RHΛ૪ / S ЄΠI TⲰN / OIKЄIA/KⲰN in six lines. Unpublished in the standard references. Nearly extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

An unpublished seal in Dumbarton Oaks (BZS.1958.106.4734) with the same invocational metric legend on the obverse must belong to the same individual. It has the same dignity of vestes and the judicial office of judge of the Velon. However, the Dumbarton Oaks seal attests him as epi tes basilikes sakelles, which is a fiscal administrative office, like epi ton oikeiakon.
