★ A wonderful middle-Byzantine stamp seal showing an interesting re-appropriation of a gem ★

Johannes, circa 9th century. Stamp Seal (Silver, 18x13 mm, 2.95 g). +KЄ ROIΘH TO CO Δ૪ IⲰANNI ('Lord, help your servant John') In center, hardstone gem engraved with a draped, bearded man facing; Δ and Θ in the fields. Rev. Outside of the silver stamp elaborately engraved with branches. Unpublished, but cf. Leu Web Auction 29 (2024), 2787 (for a similar piece). A wonderful middle-Byzantine stamp seal showing an interesting re-appropriation of a gem. Good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

While this stamp seal was produced during the Byzantine period, in the 9th century, the gem it contains is likely several centuries older, though the exact age is difficult to determine. Such reappropriations of gemstones are known, but this example is particularly elaborate and finely engraved. Clearly, Johannes was a wealthy individual, and his personal seal - likely worn around his neck - was crafted by a skilled silversmith.
