Description

Herakleios, patrikios and monostrategos, 698-705. Seal (Lead, 29 mm, 25.65 g, 12 h). Cruciform monogram of ΘЄOTOKЄ BOHΘЄI; in quadrants, HP-AKΛ/ЄI/Ⲱ. Rev. +ΠA/TPIKIⲰ / S MONOC/TPATH/ΓⲰ in five lines. Zacos/Veglery 1982. Some surface roughness, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This seal very likely belongs to Herakleios, the brother of Tiberius III Apsimar (698-705). After the ascension of his brother, Herakleios was styled patrikios and appointed commander-in-chief (monostrategos) of all the Anatolian themes. He retained this position until he was killed by Justinian II, after the downfall of his brother.
