Description

Titus A... T... (?), 3rd-4th centuries. Seal (Lead, 17 mm, 4.98 g). TAT in rectangular fram. Rostovtsev/Prou p. 164, no. 30. Still 1724 and 1791. Gorny & Mosch 278 (2021), 3977 (part). Good very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

These letters are most likely the initials of a Roman trinomina, the three-part naming system used by male Roman citizens in ancient Rome. The trinomina consisted of three names: the praenomen (which in this case would be Titus), the 'nomen' of the family or 'gens', and the cognomen, which was originally a nickname or distinguishing title but eventually indicated a particular family branch.
