Description

Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.71 g, 6 h), military mint moving with Caesar in Gallia Narbonensis or Hispania Citerior, 49-48. CAESA[R] Elephant walking right, trampling on horned serpent. Rev. Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis with wolf's head at the top, and apex. Babelon (Julia) 9. Cohen 49. Crawford 443/1. RBW 1557. Sydenham 1006. Darkly toned. Somewhat rough and with areas of weakness, otherwise, nearly very fine.

From the collection of the Swiss-Spanish coin dealer and former Swiss Guard at the Vatican José Truyol, formed since the early 1970s.
