Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 165-42 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 14.87 g, 12 h), Aristion, Philon and Hegias, magistrates, 97/6. Head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet adorned with Pegasos and long tendril on the bowl, and with the foreparts of four horses above the visor. Rev. A-ΘE / API-ΣΤΙ/ΩΝ / ΦI/ΛΩN / HΓI/[A]Σ Owl standing facing on Amphora; to right, Pegasos grazing left; on amphora, K; in exergue, ΣΟ; all within laurel wreath. Thompson 983. Harshly cleaned and struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, good very fine.
