Description

★ Extremely rare with gilding on the obverse ★

AXUM. Aphilas, circa 310-325. Chrysargyros (Gilt Silver, 12 mm, 0.82 g, 12 h). ΑΦΙΛΑ - ΒΑCIΛI Draped bust of Aphilas to right, wearing tight-fitting head cloth and circular earring; above, pellet in crescent; head and field inlaid in gold. Rev. ΑΦΙΛΑC B-ACIΛЄΥC Draped bust of Aphilas to right, wearing tight-fitting head cloth and circular earring, set within shallow round incuse within circular border; above, pellet in crescent. Hahn, Aksumite, 8. Hahn & Keck, MAKS, pl. 2, 9.64 ( this coin ). Munro-Hay, AC, type 10. Extremely rare with gilding on the obverse instead of the reverse. Numerous cleaning scratches, otherwise, nearly very fine.

This curious piece accidentally has a gilded obverse rather than a gilded reverse, as is the norm.
