Description

★ Well struck and with a beautiful reverse ★

Manuel I Comnenus, 1143-1180. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 32 mm, 4.38 g, 6 h), Constantinopolis, circa 1167-1180. Christ seated facing on throne with back, wearing pallium and colobium, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left; in fields, XC - IC. Rev. ΜΑΝ૪ΗΛ - ΔЄCΠΟΤ Manuel I standing facing on the left, wearing divitision and chlamys, holding labarum in his right and globus cruciger in his left, crowned by the Virgin Mary, standing facing on the right; to left and right of the Virgin, MP -ΦV. SB 1961. A well struck example with a beautiful reverse. Minor graffiti, otherwise, extremely fine.

Privately acquired from Lance Chaplin, previously from an English collection formed since the 1960s.
