★ A lovely portrait of Crispus ★
Crispus, Caesar, 316-326. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.52 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 321. CRISPVS NOB CAES Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Crispus to right. Rev. BEATA TRAQVILLTAS / •PTR• Globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS / XX; above, three stars. Cf. RIC 324 (for possible prototype). Minor roughness on the obverse and struck from a somewhat worn reverse die, otherwise, about extremely fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink on 2 September 1999.
The coin's style clearly denotes it as a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Furthermore, in the official Beata coinage, Crispus never appears with a radiate crown; neither RIC nor Alten & Zschucke listed any such examples in 2004.
