Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 20 mm, 2.87 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 321. CONSTANTINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. BEATA TRANQVILLCAS / STR Globe set on altar inscribed VO/TIS / XX; above, three stars. Cf. RIC 317 (for prototype). Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, privately acquired from Spink on 2 September 1999.
The style of this coin could pass for official were it not for the slightly odd portrait and the blundered reverse legend. These features show that this is a well made 'barbarous' imitation of Trier RIC 317.
