ISLAMIC, Mamluks. al-Nasir Nasir al-Din Muhammad I, AH 693-4, 698-708, 709-41 / AD 1293-4, 1299-1309, 1310-41. Fals (Bronze, 16 mm, 1.56 g), third reign, Hama, AH 709-741 / AD. Mihrab (prayer niche of a mosque) placed on two columns with a mosque lamp hanging from the mihrab. Rev. Mint name 'hama' in Arabic within central circle; around, 'al-sultan al-malik al-nasir nasir al-dunya wa’l-din' ('the Sultan, the Victorious King, Defender of the World and the Faith' in Arabic). Balog, Mamluk Sultans, 241. Rare and with beautiful earthen highlights. Very fine.
Al-Nasir Nasir al-Din Muhammad I was famous for donating glass mosque lamps to religious institutions.
