Description

★ A beautifully toned dekadrachm of Dionysos I ★

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 33 mm, 43.01 g, 11 h), signed by Euainetos, circa 405-400. Charioteer driving quadriga galloping to left, holding the reins with his left hand and kentron in his right; above, Nike flying right, crowning the charioteer with a wreath; in exergue, on two slightly raised lines, shield, pair of greaves, cuirass and crested helmet; below, [ΑΘΛΑ]. Rev. [ΣΥΡΑ]Κ[ΟΣΙΩΝ] Head of Arethusa to left, wearing wreath of reeds, triple-pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins; below the dolphin swimming under Arethusa's neck, signature [ΕΥΑΙΝΕ]. Boston MFA 424 ( same dies ). Dewing 893-895 ( same dies ). Gallatin O. VI-R.C. XIV. SNG ANS 369 ( same dies ). A beautifully toned and very well struck example without the usual die rust. Cleaning marks from removing horn silver, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the T. Frisbie Collection, ex Leu 2, 11 May 2018, 64 and previously from the M.G. Collection, formed in the 1980s and 1990s.
