Description

★ Lightly toned and of fine style ★

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.36 g, 11 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, [ketos to right]. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethousa to right, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins. Boehringer Series XVIa, 556 (V282/R3886). HGC 2, 1311. Lightly toned and of fine style. Struck on a slightly short flan with minor scratches on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
