SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.00 g, 11 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Diademed head of Arethousa to right, wearing circular earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 574.3 ( this coin, illustrated on pl. 21, V287/R394). Boston MFA 377 ( same dies ). SNG Lloyd 1330 ( same dies ). SNG Lockett 943 ( same dies ). Perfectly centered and attractively toned, and with an exceptional pedigree. Slightly rough and with minor marks, otherwise, very fine.
