Description

L. Caecilius Metellus Diadematus, 128 BC. Denarius (Subaeratus, 18 mm, 3.31 g, 7 h), a contemporary plated imitation. Head of Roma to right, wearing crested and winged helmet; behind, ✱ (mark of value). Rev. ROMA Pax driving fast quadriga to right, holding olive branch in her right hand and scepter and reins in her left; below, head of an elephant to right, wearing bell. Cf. Babelon (Caecilia) 38, Crawford 262/1, RBW 1060 and Sydenham 496 (for prototype). Lightly toned. Test cut on the reverse, otherwise, very fine.
