Description

ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Arghun, AH 683-690 / AD 1284-1291. Dirham (Silver, 20 mm, 2.44 g, 3 h). Within a square, ‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh Muḥammad / rasūl [Allāh]’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’ in Arabic); illegible mint and date formula around. Rev. Within a circle, ‘Hakanu / Ariba / Argunu / Deledkeguluk’ (‘Struck by Arghun, the vice-regal governor of the Khan’ in Uighur); below, traces of ‘Arghūn’ in Arabic. Album 2146. Diler Ar-160. Areas of weakness and somewhat double struck, otherwise, very fine.
