ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Drachm (Silver, 31 mm, 3.49 g, 9 h), Arab-Sasanian type. Citing governor ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmir (circa AH 66-72 = 685-691), SK (Sijistan/Sistan), AH 66 = 685/6. Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt'’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾp̄dwlʾcyc Y / ʾp̄dwlʾ Y ʾmwrʾn’ (‘ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmir’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh – al-ʿAzīz’ (‘In the name of Allah, the Almighty’ in Arabic); in upper left margin, countermark ‘jāʾiz’ (‘current’ in Arabic). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, SK (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 25.
