Description

ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, rival caliph, AH 60-73 / AD 680-692. Drachm (Silver, 30 mm, 3.73 g, 4 h), Arab-Sasanian type, DA (Darabgird), YE 60 = 691/2. Draped bust resembling Khosrau II to right, wearing elaborate mural crown; behind head, ‘GDE ʾp̄zwt'’ (‘[may his] glory increase’ in Pahlavi); before head, ‘ʾp̄dwlʾ ʾmwl [Y] / wlwyšnykʾn’, i.e. ‘Abdulā amīr ī wurrōyišnīgān’ (‘ʿAbd Allah, the Commander of the Believers’ in Pahlavi); in outer margin, ‘bism Allāh’ (‘In the name of Allah’ in Kufic). Rev. Fire altar with ribbons, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, DA (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Album 16. Rare. Areas of weakness and with minor scratches, otherwise, good very fine.
