Description

Constantine I, 307/310-337. Siliqua (Silver, 19 mm, 2.88 g, 6 h), Constantinople, March 326. Plain-diademed head of Constantine I to right. Rev. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG / CONS Victory advancing left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Ramskold, Silver emissions (2018), p. 170, fig. 7C ( this coin, emission 1). RIC -. RSC -. Very rare. Holed and with minor porosity and light deposits, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This very rare piece is one of five examples known, of which three in private hands, the others in Vienna and Oxford. The 'Victory emission' with Constantine in a plain diadem was unknown to Bruun. Ramskold, Silver emissions (2018) described it as the first emission to be struck at the newly opened mint of Constantinopolis. The occasion was Constantine's visit in March 326 as he set out on his vicennial journey to Rome.
