Hadrian, 117-138. Cistophorus (Subaeratus, 27 mm, 8.64 g, 6 h), unattributed mint in Asia Minor. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P Bare head of Hadrian to right. Rev. COS - III Six grain ears bound together. Metcalf -. RPC III online 1472A.1 ( this coin ). Apparently unique. Rough and somewhat corroded, otherwise, very fine.

Subaerati are commonly found amongst Hadrian's eastern denarii (see below, lots 3038, 3042-3043, 3091, 3093, 3100 and 4412). This is a rare case of a plated cistophorus, which again underlines the close connection between the two groups.
