Description

★ The earliest post-reform Islamic dirham ★

ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Dirham (Silver, 29 mm, 2.43 g), Jayy, AH 78 = AD 697/8. Album 126. Klat -. SICA II, -. Of the highest rarity and great historical importance, the earliest post-reform Islamic dirham. Crystallized and broken into several pieces, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, ex St. James 37, 27 June 2016, 206.

This is the earliest post-reform Islamic dirham, struck in AH 78, the year after the introduction of the post-reform dinars. Although the AH 78 dirhams were struck in several mints, they are of the highest rarity today and even more elusive than the AH 77 dinars.
