Description

Konstantinos Tzimpeas, circa 1279. Seal (Lead, 42 mm, 33.53 g, 12 h). Θ A/ΓI/OC - ΓЄ/ⲰP/ΓIO/C Saint George, nimbate, standing facing, holding spear in his right hand and resting his left hand on shield. Rev. ΓPAΦAC KV/PⲰN MOI KⲰN CTAN /TINⲰ TZIM]ΠЄA / ЄK TPOMATⲰN / PV૪ MЄ CV CT PA/THΛATA ('Affirming what is written to me, Konstantinos Tzimpeas, you, General (Saint George), deliver me from harm') in six lines. Cheynet/Theodoridis 210. Wassiliou-Seibt, Corpus I 313. Somewhat rough and with two small holes, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

A Konstantinos Tzimpeas is attested for the year 1279 as apographeus in Thessalonika. A relative of his named Theodoros is attested in 1304 as servant of the emperor. The family name may be connected to the fortress Tzympe (Çimpe) on the Gallipoli peninsula.
