★ An impressive seal of Nikolaos Maurozomes ★
Nikolaos Maurozomes, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 28 mm, 11.34 g, 12 h). O / Α/Γ/Ι/O/C - N/I/K/O/Λ/A/[O/C?] Saint Nicholas, nimbate, standing facing, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left hand. Rev. +OMⲰNV/M૪NTA MAV/POZⲰ MHN [ΜЄ?] / [C]KEΠOIC ('May you protect me, your namesake, Maurozomes') in four lines. Apparently unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. A charming metric seal with an attractive image of St. Nicholas. Good very fine.
Ex Leu Web Auction 20, 16-18 July 2022, 3152 and previously from a European collection, acquired before 2021.
The reverse legend must be a 12-syllable verse, a poetic form very beloved on seals by this time. The unclear last letters of the third line likely read 'MЄ', which would be needed to complete the verse.
