Description

★ Extremely rare, one of four known examples ★

Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.50 g, 12 h), Rome, circa 320. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to right, seen from behind. Rev. ROMAE A-ETERNAE / P - R / R Q Roma seated right, inscribing with her right hand shield set on her left knee with X/V in two lines; at her side, shield. RIC 155 var. (unlisted officina). Extremely rare, one of four known examples. Slightly rough, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

This bust type is paired with many reverse types in the Rome emissions RIC 143-224, almost always struck at officina T. For the 'ROMAE AETERNA' type, over 20 examples are known from officina T, but only four from officina Q, a single example from officina P, and none from officina S.
