Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.11 g, 9 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Uncertain mint in Gaul (?), circa 333-340 (?). Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. CONSTA[N]/TINVS / AVG / PTR in four lines; above, laurel wreath. Cf. RIC 485 (for prototype). M. Harlick: Anepigraphic bronze coins of Constantine and family, in: The Celator 21 (2007), fig. 18 ( same dies ). Zschucke 2002, 15.5. Minor areas of weakness, otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.
The unofficial imitations of dynastic bronzes copied Rome and Trier in about equal numbers. Surprisingly, the Trier imitations were apparently produced some ten years after the original emission (see lot 2943 below). Ramskold's database includes just over 100 such dynastic imitations with Trier mint marks. This is the second example known from these dies.
