Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.00 g, 6 h), Cyzicus, February 326. Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. CONSTAN/TINVS / AVG / SMKЄ in four lines; above, laurel wreath. RIC 30. Slightly smoothed and with minor weakness on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.
The dynastic bronzes for Constantine I from Cyzicus are among the less rare types and all from officina Є. Ramskold (pers. comm.) recorded 14 examples in public collections and a further 28 in private collections, 16 of which are in the Ramskold Collection. In addition, the two examples with Constantine wearing a triple row wreath (see lot 2897 below) are regarded here as a separate type and are not included in the numbers above. Ramskold (Constantine's vicennalia (2013), p. 419-420 and fig. 3) discussed this emission and its date, which is either the initial vicennial celebration in July 325 or the onset of the journey to Rome in February 326.
