Description

Constantine I, 307/310-337. 1/4 Follis (Bronze, 14 mm, 0.81 g, 6 h), Treveri, 313. IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG Bare head of Constantine I to right. Rev. SAPIENT PRINCIP / PTR Owl standing left on altar; around, shield, spear and helmet. RIC 63. Zschucke 1989, 12.10. Zschucke 2002, 12.11. Extremely rare. Somewhat rough and with a thin flan crack, otherwise, about very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold. privately acquired from Roma in 2012.

Only two examples of this extremely rare type are recorded in NummusBible II. Bruun, in RIC VIII, extended the dates of the 313 emission to 315 to close the gap with the subsequent 'Soli Invicto' emission, but without any clear reason. It is more likely that this emission, like the parallel emission in Rome, was restricted to 313, as stated by Zschucke in 2002.
