Description

Julius Caesar, 49-44 BC. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 4.13 g, 6 h), with M. Mettius, Rome, January-February 44. CAESA[R•IMP] Wreathed head of Julius Caesar to right; to left, lituus and simpulum. Rev. M•METTIVS Venus standing front, head to left, resting left arm on shield set on globe, holding Victory in her right hand and long scepter in her left; in field to left, H. Babelon (Julia) 32 and (Mettia) 4. Crawford 480/3. RBW 1678. Sydenham 1056. An attractive example struck on a very broad flan. Areas of weakness and with light marks, otherwise, good very fine.
