Description

SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Antioch (?). Pseudo-autonomous issue. AE (Bronze, 11 mm, 1.11 g, 12 h), 2nd-3rd century AD. Draped bust of Apollo (?) to right. Rev. [AN]-T-I-O (?) Lyre. McAlee -. McAlee Suppl. -. Cf. Sol Numismatik E-Auction 8 (2022), 223-224 (similar design but differing style on obverse). RPC -. Apparently unpublished. Light deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The similarity in design to small bronzes struck in Antioch and the tentative reading of T-I-O on the reverse both point towards Antioch as the mint for this curious issue.
