Description

★ The first autonomous issue of Ujjain after the fall of the Mauryan Empire ★

INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Malwa). Ujjain. Circa 185-150 BC. Karshapana (Bronze, 15 mm, 5.00 g). Four punches, including six-armed symbol with arrows and taurines, Bodhi Tree, sun symbol and Shiva as Lord Mahakal standing front, holding kalasha (sacred pot) in his right hand and stick in his left. Rev. Two punches, including three ovals in a row and the four-orbed Ujjain symbol. Gupta & Hardaker, series VIII, 623 ( this coin ). Very rare. Minor corrosion, otherwise, about very fine.

From the collection of Prof. Dr. Björn-Uwe Abels, privately acquired in 1990.

This interesting type is probably the first autonomous issue of Ujjain after the fall of the Mauryan Empire.
