Description

BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Apollophanes, circa 40/35 BC. Drachm (Silver, 16 mm, 2.36 g, 7 h), Indian standard. BAΣIΛЄΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ - AΠΟΛΛOΘANOY Draped bust of Apollophanes to right, wearing Boiotian helmet. Rev. 'Maharajasa tratarasa Aplaphanasa' ('of the Great King Apollophanes the Savior' in Kharoshthi) Athena Promachos advancing left, holding shield on her left arm and brandishing thunderbolt with her right; to right, letter in Kharoshthi. HGC 12, 475. Very rare. Corroded and porous, otherwise, fine.
