Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.23 g, 6 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVR-ΑΚΟΣ-ΙΟ-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair drawn up at the back and wearing pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 132 (V60/R90). HGC 2, 1306. Die break on the obverse, otherwise, good fine.
