Description

★ An interesting rendering of the kalpè horse race ★

SICILY. Himera. Circa 440-430/25 BC. Didrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 7.81 g, 10 h). [ΙΜΕΡΑΙΟΝ] Youthful nude rider seated sideways on horse prancing to left, holding horse mane with his right hand and preparing to jump off. Rev. ΣΟΤΕΡ The nymph Himera standing front, head to left, holding phiale in her right hand to pour libation over altar and raising her left; to right, kerykeion entwined with taenia. Gutmann & Schwabacher 3 ( same dies ). HGC 2, 439. Rare. Harshly cleaned and with some roughness, otherwise, fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The obverse type probably depicts the kalpè, a horse race in which the rider jumped off from his horse to perform the last lap running.
