★ A very rare hybrid issue ★
ISLAMIC, Seljuks. Great Seljuk. Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad I Tapar, AH 492-511 / AD 1105-1118. Dinar (Gold, 24 mm, 3.16 g), a hybrid issue, uncertain mint, without date. Cf. Album 1683 (for reverse of Muhammad I) and Album 1618 (for reverse of Mas'ud I). A very rare hybrid issue combining a reverse die of a Great Seljuk ruler with a reverse die of a Ghaznavid ruler. Struck from slightly worn dies and with a slightly wavy flan, otherwise, very fine.
From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, ex Album 24, 14 January 2016, 428.
This interesting hybrid issue combines a reverse of the Ghaznavid ruler Mas'ud I (AH 421-432) in the style of the mint in Nishapur and citing the Abbasid caliph al-Qa'im with a reverse of the Great Seljuq Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad I Tapar (AH 492-511) in the style of the mint in Madinat al-Salam, citing the caliphal heir 'Umdat al-Dawla Abu Mansur. Cf. N. Lowick ANS Museum Notes 28, 1983, pp.187-193 regarding the subject of 'wandering dies'.
