ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, AH 99-101 / AD 717-720. Pashiz (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.73 g), citing Udayy ibn Arta', governor of al-Basra under the caliph 'Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, al-Basra, AH 100 = AD 718/9. Sasanian style bust to right; before head, ABZWN (unknown word in Pahlawi). Rev. 'Amara 'Udayy bi-Jawâz al-Mi'a' ('Order of 'Udayy, for the time of 100' in Kufic). Gyselen 99. Of the highest rarity, the second known example. Heavily corroded, otherwise, about very fine.
